George Gershwin’s iconic masterpiece, Rhapsody in Blue, was one of the first mainstream piano concertos
to crossover into the world of jazz. Starting with the famous (impossible to play) clarinet glissando,
it is a fun, brilliant and virtuosic feat for all.
In this program we feature two other rhapsodies: Debussy’s Premier Rhapsody for clarinet
featuring Southern Cross Soloists member Paul Dean, and Dean’s own composition, Rhapsody for
Southern Cross Soloists – a world premiere. Paul has insisted on the inclusion of the contraforte
(a groundbreaking re-invention of the sometimes awkward contrabassoon) in his piece, so we
welcome contraforte expert Brock Imison of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
We will also be joined by Principal Trumpet of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra,
Sarah Wilson, in the Gershwin and in a delightful trio sonata by Vivaldi. Soprano
Margaret Schindler will also fascinate with the intriguing songs of Aaron Copland based
on the haunting poetry of Emily Dickinson.
