CONTRA CONCERTS: A New Chamber Music Series

Contra Concerts and Southern Cross Soloists (SXS) are proud to announce a new musical collaboration, bringing virtuoso soloists together for a new series of invigorating chamber music to Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley and Toowoomba across April–May–June 2021.

Contra Concerts, in association with SXS, will perform one weekend a month throughout April, May and June, bringing intimate chamber music recitals to Holy Trinity Hall in Fortitude Valley and touring to Toowoomba's St Luke's Hall and the Toowoomba Grammar School Old Hall.

The first concert, BACH OUT LOUD (Toowoomba: 3pm Fri April 2 / Brisbane: 2pm Sat April 3) is performed over the Easter weekend and features soloists Jonathan Henderson–flute, Tania Frazer–oboe, Katherine Philp–cello and Alex Raineri–harpsichord, who form an intimate quartet offering a recital of quintessential works from the baroque period by J.S. Bach.

Next, DIGITAL DEBUSSY (Brisbane: 3pm Sat May 22 / Toowoomba: 3pm Sun May 23) features sololists Jonathan Henderson–flute, James Wannan–viola and Emily Granger–harp, fusing French and Japanese music by Debussy and Takemitsu with a new Australian composition from Sydney composer Tristan Coelho that transports acoustic chamber music into the digital age with the addition of live electronics.

The series closes with SONIC BEETHOVEN (Brisbane: 6pm Fri June 11 / Toowoomba: 3pm Sun June 13), a raucous 60-minute concert of Beethoven alongside powerful Australian works by Paul Dean and Lisa Cheney, performed by duo Jonathan Henderson–flute and Valley resident pianist and soloist Alex Raineri.

For Contra Concerts curator and SXS flute soloist Jonathan Henderson, forming a connection with the audience is crucial. "In our series the musicians are right in front of you, with the music unfolding just metres away. The heritage halls we are performing in are intimate venues which seat around one hundred people, so there's no need for opera glasses or expensive A-reserve seating. Everyone can feel close to the musicians and fully absorb the music from any seat", Henderson says.

SXS Artistic director Tania Frazer said Southern Cross Soloists are very excited to be associated with Contra Concerts. "As one of the newest members of our ensemble, we were very eager to appoint Jonathan as flute soloist on his return to Australia after ten years working in leading orchestras in Europe. We are now delighted to support Jonathan in this unique and attractive series that brings appealing programming and world class performances to Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley and Toowoomba City.”
