Southern Cross Soloists is thrilled to announce that our multi-award-nominated chamber music festival has officially relocated to the stunning Tamborine Mountain! A huge thank you to all our supporters, sponsors, partners, and talented musicians who made our taster event, The Soloists' Mountain Showcase, possible.
Held at Shambala Estate, this one-day taster was the perfect retreat for chamber music lovers. Amidst chandeliers, candles, and the natural beauty of Tamborine Mountain, the two concerts were met with standing ovations.
The day began with Jakub Jakowicz and Paavali Jumppanen at 11 a.m. Dr. Gemma Regan from Limelight Magazine commented, “The synergy between the two outstanding performers produced one of the best concerts I have witnessed.”
Finnish pianist Paavali Jumppanen and virtuoso Polish violinist Jakub Jakowicz delivered an exceptionally polished performance of Schubert's Fantasie in C major and Beethoven’s Kreutzer Violin Sonata No. 9. Both artists engaged in an incredible musical conversation that showcased their virtuosity and marked an end to their succesful Australian Tour. They also treated our audience to Szymanowski’s Fontaine d’Aréthuse and Subito (1992) by Polish composer Witold Lutosławski.
After a delightful lunch break prepared by Shambala Estate, audiences returned to the ballroom for Concert 2. Despite a last-minute cancellation by Australian guitarist Slava Grigoryan due to a death in the family, Acting SXS Co-Artistic Director Margaret Blades curated a successful program in just 48 hours, which was met with an equally enthusiastic standing ovation.
Featuring Acting SXS Co-Artistic Director and violinist Margaret Blades, award-winning cellist György Deri, pianist Roger Cui, Musical Jewels celebrated beloved works in the chamber music repertoire. The concert also included the 2024 SXS Margaret Schindler Vocal Scholar, operatic bass Jack Bolton.
From Mozart and Britten to Kodály and Liszt, these incredible artists presented a demanding program that showcased why they are among Australia’s leading musicians. Highlights included excerpts from Mozart's Sonata for Violin and Piano K.301 featuring Margaret Blades, Kodály’s Epigrams with Roger Cui and György Deri, Britten’s arrangements of two folk songs beautifully sung by Jack Bolton, and a last-minute composition of O Mistress Mine by Sean O’Boyle AM for bass, violin, and piano. As a final treat, the newly formed trio featuring Margaret, Roger, and György performed a delightful interpretation of Piazzolla’s Oblivion.
Mark your calendars! The 21st Soloists' Chamber Music Festival will take place from August 22-24, 2025.
